چکیده

We describe the newly written code GADGET which is suitable both for cosmological simulations of structure formation and for the simulation of interacting galaxies. GADGET evolves self-gravitating collisionless fluids with the traditional N-body approach, and a collisional gas by smoothed particle hydrodynamics. Along with the serial version of the code, we discuss a parallel version that has been designed to run on massively parallel supercomputers with distributed memory. While both versions use a tree algorithm to compute gravitational forces, the serial version of GADGET can optionally employ the special-purpose hardware GRAPE instead of the tree. Periodic boundary conditions are supported by means of an Ewald summation technique. The code uses individual and adaptive timesteps for all particles, and it combines this with a scheme for dynamic tree updates. Due to its Lagrangian nature, GADGET thus allows a very large dynamic range to be bridged, both in space and time. So far, GADGET has been successfully used to run simulations with up to 7.5×107 particles, including cosmological studies of large-scale structure formation, high-resolution simulations of the formation of clusters of galaxies, as well as workstation-sized problems of interacting galaxies. In this study, we detail the numerical algorithms employed, and show various tests of the code. We publically release both the serial and the massively parallel version of the code.

ngravs: Distinct gravitational interactions in gadget-2

We discuss an extension of the massively parallel cosmological simulation code gadget-2, which now enables investigation of multiple and distinct gravitational force laws, provided they are dominated by a constant scaling of the Newtonian force. In addition to simplifying investigations of a universally modified force law, the ngravs extension provides a foundation for state-of-the-art collisio...

The cosmological simulation code GADGET - 2

We discuss the cosmological simulation code GADGET-2, a new massively parallel TreeSPH code, capable of following a collisionless fluid with the N-body method, and an ideal gas by means of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Our implementation of SPH manifestly conserves energy and entropy in regions free of dissipation, while allowing for fully adaptive smoothing lengths. Gravitational forc...

Tree–Particle–Mesh: an adaptive, efficient, and parallel code for collisionless cosmological simulation

An improved implementation of an N-body code for simulating collisionless cosmological dynamics is presented. TPM (Tree–Particle–Mesh) combines the PM method on large scales with a tree code to handle particle-particle interactions at small separations. After the global PM forces are calculated, spatially distinct regions above a given density contrast are located; the tree code calculates the ...

MPJ Express Meets Gadget: Towards a Java Code for Cosmological Simulations

Gadget-2 is a massively parallel structure formation code for cosmological simulations. In this paper, we present a Java version of Gadget-2. We evaluated the performance of the Java version by running a colliding galaxy simulation and found that it can achieve around 70% of C Gadget-2’s performance.

Code Optimization and Scaling of the Astrophysics Software Gadget on Intel Xeon Phi

The whitepaper reports our investigation into the porting, optimization and subsequent performance of the astrophysics software package GADGET, on the Intel Xeon Phi. The GADGET code is intended for cosmological N-body/SPH simulations to solve a wide range of astrophysical tasks. The test cases within the project were simulations of galaxy systems. A performance analysis of the code was carried...
